Matt, Becca and 45 Really Happy Sled Dogs!

We are Windward Kennels!

We have owned and operated this kennel for 7 years, starting in Massachusetts, and are now operating in Trapper Creek, Alaska. We live off of the road system, and must haul everything, our groceries, dog food, laundry, propane, and even a bed, just over a mile and a half through mucky, wet swamp. We take great pride in living where we do, but always look forward to freeze-up, which makes hauling gear much easier.

We have 40 Alaskan Huskies, mixed-breed dogs bred specifically for pulling sleds. We also have 3 Siberian Huskies, which are more of a freighting dog, a German Shorthair Pointer who loves to pull a sled, and a Staffordshire Terrier, the ultimate couch potato.

In March of 2007, our dogs brought Matt over the toughest trail in Iditarod History, for a finish under the burled arch, in Nome. We are now both signed up to compete in Iditarod 2008, and are spending significant amounts of time both training the dogs and finding funding.

Our dogs enjoy a life of luxury. Each one receives a great deal of exercise and attention each day, and are very well adjusted dogs. We feed our dogs a super premium dog food called MOMENTUM, which has proven to be an extremely effective diet, both in our kennel and other top ranking Iditarod kennels. All of our pups enjoy their own house with overspilling straw, and are tethered in a way that allows them room to play with each other. At any given time, you can look out the picture window and see multiple pairs of dogs playing and having fun. We also do a great deal of free running, where the dogs are let loose, and we all go for a walk!

We believe in extraordiary care of our sled dogs, and it shines through in our successes. Be sure to check out our race results at www.windward-racesandresults.blogspot.com
